"Loisaidas the Movie" was not good...but still buy it and here's why

Loisaidas was bad…like really bad. There was little in terms of storyline, the characters were all pretty flat and one dimensional, and there was no real protagonist/antagonist tension.

However, as an independent and intellectual starving for a shift in the entertainment industry’s status quo, I have zero regrets about purchasing such an underwhelming movie.

The Let-Down

After renting The Loisaidas on Vimeo for just $8 I was initially happy with the camera work and promising movie personas. I'm thinking, "produced by Kanye and directed by Dame (who also directed Paid in Full- a classic!).... this should be good!"

This film, which is actually broken up in 8 short episodes, opened up with a ton of questions. I assumed these questions would be fleshed out as the story unraveled. However, there was no real story I would learn, and thus no continuity.

Not only were the end-of-episode rap videos awkward, they generally had little to do with any of the previous events or dialogue in the film. By end of the movie, I as a viewer was left with nothing, not even confusion…

And yet but I still don’t regret this purchase and would buy it once again...here’s why…

There is hope...

• Dame intends on making more independent movies and it can only get better from here unless they decide to shoot on an iphone 4s.

• Dame is partnering up with Kanye West long term, meaning that their films will likely kick the played-out crutch of black men and guns, making room for yeezy-style creativity- meaning better developed characters, more meaningful and intense storylines, and just maybe, critical social commentary.

• This push into a direct-to-consumer relationship by creatives of color will only be good for entertainment as a whole. As more independents realize that they can go outside of institutional studios, producers and writers, we will get productions which are more diverse, more nuanced and true to life.

• …continuing on from point 3, We could get another “Love Jones” out of this movement being sparked by Dame Dash

• People of color, Native people and Asian Americans included, will lose any excuse for not having more quality productions that speak to their experiences and perspectives…direct-to-consumer relationships give consumers more control over their own customer experiences.

So go get the movie, support the movement for independent media…Dame’s film work can only go up from here.
